in 2021, i used the music programming language SuperCollider to create semi-random electronic textures. i released these "signals" as a series of weekly pieces using exclusively sine waves. the entire project can also be listened to here.
the project grew from the first piece, "Alias Waltz," a 3/4 dance built around sampling and holding a single oscillator's pitch sweep up. both the left and right channels' sounds come from the same source, but the right channel is grabbing and sustaining frequencies at set points, giving the impression of chordal accompaniment, while the left channel continues, giving an atonal sweeping effect.
looking at the results in Supercollider's oscilloscope, i was struck by the visual interplay of pure sine tones at varying intervals. this provided a basis for the rest of the project: writing music based on their visual representations. this comes through the clearest in pieces like "firelight," where both sounds and visuals mimic the wings of insects on a summer night, and "turn," where percussive elements follow their title as they pan in space.
